Sean says… Turning Season

I know it is Autumn when I’m scrambling around with my morning coffee wondering why I can find only ONE arm warmer, leg warmer and shoe cover. This is all whilst simultaneously calculating the exact thickness/waterproofness required for that exact day, well morning at least. Yes the Summer is over.

Strava KoMs are getting more difficult to bag as the road surface gets more clogged up with debris. And there is the wind. A headwind blows harder and the nights draw in. It is the end of the road racing season. The Tour of Lombardy gives us our last chance to see some top quality action until Omloop Het Nieuwsbladkicks off the cobbled classics season next February. Run on many of the same roads as the Tour of Flanders, this 200km classic is something to look forward to over the dark, cold months.

Omloop Het Nieuwsblad is a cycle race I have never been to and so, in order to set an early goal for the coming year I’ve decided to ride the sportive and take the whole family over to watch the race. There is always a kids race on offer too, so our son Oak should get his first taste of Belgian racing. Al from Polocini has offered somewhere for us to stay in Ghent (the start and finish line) so we’ll have some local knowledge to help, and a good guide to the local beers! Hopefully we’ll see a Team Sky rider victorious again, although as ever, Peter Sagan will be hard to beat.

In the meantime, the cyclocross season is upon us though and local races are starting up all over the Northern Hemisphere. If you haven’t tried one, I’d recommend a novice race. You don’t need a specialist bike and it is a huge amount of fun.

Our friends, Scott Dedenbach and David Palan are back with the Bike Shop CX podcast, which is part of the excellent Wide Angle Podium Network of podcasts. You can also watch all the World Cup races on the UCI YouTube channel.

Have a great Winter of cycling on or off road, and set some goals for next Spring and Summer. Even better, share them with us on TwitterFacebook and Instagram.
