Wheel building is often thought of as a black art. But in actual fact, it's an easily learned method and we'd love to show you how. Many of our students tell us that they enjoy wheelbuilding the most out of all the topics they cover here. We have two different levels of course as you can see below. The introductory level is the same as the two days of wheelbuilding we teach on our professional level two course. The advanced level of wheelbuilding takes your skill a stage further and will cover wheel building techniques taught in our professional level three diploma.
LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE
WHEELBUILDING FUNDAMENTALS - TWO DAY COURSE
Wheel building is a stand alone skill. No previous mechanical knowledge is needed, though the more you read up on popular wheel sets and components beforehand the better.
The course takes place over two days - normally a weekend.
The skills learned in this course allow you to maintain, repair and rebuild factory built wheels, as well as creating your own custom wheel sets. An immensely satisfying stand alone task - both creative and mechanical. Truly an essential art form!
- Day 1 - Materials and components, spoke length calculation, rim, hub and frame compatibility. Lacing patterns and methods. End of day one, lacing practical assessment.
- Day 2 - Tensioning and truing. How to properly tension and pre stress a wheel and finish it by truing to perfection! End of day two, true and tension assessment on your completed wheel.
